Wide-awake (WALANT) hand surgery | Ohio State Medical Center

Some of the unique things we’re doing here
at Ohio State – number one, probably the biggest change in hand surgery from when I
was a trainee until now, has been a big trend towards wide-awake surgery or the patient
staying awake. So we at Ohio State are at the cutting-edge. We do a lot of procedures without any anesthesia
so it’s safer for the patient and the and the patient satisfaction is very high. We can very comfortably provide enough numbing
medicine that we can do pretty complex procedures with the patient completely awake, which can
lead to improved outcomes and is safer for the patient if they don’t have to go to sleep.
