What happens if glaucoma goes untreated?

Glaucoma is a condition of the optic nerve
which gets damaged in many cases because the pressure in the eyeball, the intraocular pressure
is high. So, if left untreated, the pressure seems to damage the optic nerve which thins
out and we can physically see that when we examine the eye at the back of the eye, the
optic nerve gets cut or thinned, and that can lead to visual loss usually in the peripheral
field of vision. You start to lose your vision and in the early stages you may not even be
aware that you’re losing sight that you have glaucoma and that’s because the peripheral
vision a lot of the times your brain will fill in the gaps because it’s used to seeing
in those places and patients are many times unaware of fact that they have glaucoma. Now,
as the disease progresses it can lead to visual loss in the centre of your vision in a lot
of cases and it can lead to blindness. So it is important that glaucoma is treated and
we can treat it by lowering the intraocular pressure. Lowering the pressure, we lower
the risk of any further damage to the eyesight and to the optic nerve, and by even one millimetre
of mercury reduction, reduces your risk by 10%. So, glaucoma should be treated and is,
you know, effectively treated in the majority of cases who, you know, lead a normal healthy
life with good vision.
