What are the side effects of laser surgery for glaucoma?

Glaucoma lasers treatments are simple and
effective in many cases. SLT is one such treatment. “Selective laser trabeculoplasty”, that’s a
very quick, painless, effective treatment and is actually very safe in the majority
of cases. Done properly in the right way, patients should have no issues. There are
very rare risks of inflammation in the eye or bleeding in the eye from such lasers, but
nowadays they’re very safe and they’re repeatable and like I said, they’re painless with no
downtime. Patient comes in, has the laser and about 70-80 percent of people have a lower
pressure with the one treatment. So SLT has been effective and it’s a good procedure in
many cases. There is also diode lasers. There’s micropulse lasers. They are a bit more specialised
and for certain cases. For example, diode laser is for end-stage glaucoma mainly; where
the pressure is very high and we’re trying to get the pressure down without causing the
patient to lose their sight, but diode does have further risks and needs to be done in
a very controlled manner.
