Susan Elner, MD – Video Profile

– Why I decided to go to medical school? Initially, I was interested in art and decided I would
probably be very hungry if I decided to do that as a profession. I had a lot of interest in science and also in working with people so I then, I think,
made the wiser decision to go on to medical school. I decided to go into ophthalmology because ophthalmology has
one of the unique advantages in examining this organ that we can see pretty
much the entire organ, unlike some other organs such
as the gastrointestinal tract. You need a lot of special
instrumentation or imaging in order to see the disease. We have the advantage in ophthalmology where you can see pretty
much the whole organ from front to back, which
makes it very satisfying that most often, after
we’ve seen a patient, by the time they leave the
office we have a very good idea where the problem is at
and what the problem is. So I find that very satisfying.
