One question I am frequently asked by teachers when I visit schools or speak at conferences: ‘Which is the best method of assessing
EAL learners?’ Well, the simple answer is that Ofsted doesn’t have a preferred assessment style for any school level assessment and the same is true for EAL.
There are a number of packages that schools are using now and we don’t say
that one is better than another. What we are looking for though and what works well is where schools have an effective way of assessing new arrivals who come into school to ensure that they capture what those children can do. While some children have not been to school before and are starting at a very basic level of their learning, others have been to school and perhaps have learnt maths, science and other
subjects albeit through the medium of another language.
