How do I know what glaucoma treatment is best for me?

Which procedure is best for you is the discussion
that needs to take place with your glaucoma specialist. He or she should be able to discuss
fully with you your options. Broadly speaking there are three categories of treatments.
Eyedrops, which will need to be put in daily. In many cases, once a day or even twice or
three times a day. The eye drops are effective, they lower the pressure medically and nowadays
there will be some new implants coming out which will mimic what the eyedrops do and
we insert the implant in your eye on the surface of your eye and you don’t have to worry about
putting eye drops in. So that may be an option in the future. With regards to lasers, lasers
are effective in many cases. They’re very simple and painless. They lower the pressure.
They may not take you off the eyedrops completely, but they will help to lower the pressure and
there’s a recent study that showed that lasers will lower the pressure and take the need
away for eyedrops in about three-quarters of patients. But that was done on patients
with early glaucoma not, you know, people who’ve established disease who have been on
eyedrops for many years. Sometimes those lasers are not suitable for patients like that and
then the discussion needs to take place if we need to lower your pressure you may need
surgery, and then within surgery there are a few options, and that will again depend
on your eye and also your own wishes and desires, and most importantly what your surgeon is
familiar with and what your surgeon feels is suitable for you. For example, MIG surgery,
the minimally invasive glaucoma surgery is effective in a lot of eyes but is not for
everyone, and it will also depend on, like I said, the familiarity of your surgeon carrying
out that procedure. MIGS does make surgery safer. It does make it quicker, but what our
aim is to lower your pressure and keep the vision as it is, preserve our eyesight, so,
you know, the most effective way and the most suitable method of lowering
your pressure, keeping the pressure down is something that your glaucoma specialist will
definitely be able to help you decide which is best for you.
