I’m Gabe Garza with today’s health news. The
eyes may be a window into more than just the soul. A new study found that how much a child’s
pupil dilates in response to seeing an emotional image may predict his or her risk for depression
over the next two years. These children were shown images of happy, angry and sad faces.
While looking at these images, their pupil dilation was measured using an eye-tracking
device. Those children who experienced larger pupil dilation when viewing the sad face images
had greater signs of depression during the follow-up. They also had a shorter time until
the onset of a significant depressive episode. Make sure you speak with your child’s pediatrician
about their mental health.
