Ask a Health Care Professional – Eye Health

[MUSIC PLAYING] DR. EUGENE SUN: Hi I am Eugene Sun, Vice President
and Chief Medical Officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico NARRATOR: The topic for November is eye health.
How often should I have an eye exam? DR. EUGENE SUN: It is recommended that everyone
have an eye exam at least every two years. People with certain diseases, for example
diabetes, should have an annual eye exam. NARRATOR: Who is at risk for eye disease?
DR. EUGENE SUN: Age is the main risk factor for eye diseases such as macular degeneration,
cataracts, and glaucoma. People older than 60 are at highest risk. People with diabetes
also have a higher risk for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts.
NARRATOR: What is a cataract? DR. EUGENE SUN: A cataract is clouding of
the lens of the eye, which is what allows you to focus on objects. If not treated, cataracts
can cause blindness and they are the leading cause of blindness worldwide.
Narrator: What are the symptoms of a cataract? DR. EUGENE SUN: People with cataracts can
experience changes in vision including cloudy, fuzzy or blurred vision. Difficulty driving
at night, increasing glare from headlights or other bright light sources, and worsening
vision requiring changes to your eyeglass prescription can be caused by cataracts.
NARRATOR: What is retinal detachment? DR. EUGENE SUN: Retinal detachment is a condition
when the light and image capturing lining of the eye, the retina, separates from the
inside of the eye. If not treated promptly, retinal detachment can cause permanent loss
of vision. NARRATOR: What are the symptoms of a retinal
detachment? DR. EUGENE SUN: A sudden or gradual increase
in the number of floaters, which are little specks in your vision, or light flashes are
symptoms of a retinal detachment. The sensation of a curtain over your field of vision is
another. If you develop any of these symptoms you should see an eye doctor immediately as
a retinal detachment is a true medical emergency. Good vision and eye health is important for
everyone. Make sure you have your eyes checked regularly by an eye care professional [MUSIC ENDS]
