170. 3D-Printed Cornea

Hey guys and welcome to goodness! I have my voice back!! YAY! Today’s goodness is about the world’s first 3D printed cornea! The cornea is the outermost layer of our eyeballs, and is super important in helping us to focus our vision! But there is a huge lack of corneas available for transplants, which are needed by 15 million people across the world! Thus, researchers from the Newcastle University in the UK have made the first ever 3D printed cornea! Made with stem cells from a healthy donor, and mixed with alginate and collagen, this solution is then put through a bio-printer, and takes less than 10 minutes to print!! WHAT!?? Even though it won’t be available for commercial use for at least another several years, this brings a huge hope for people in need of a cornea transplant to be able to see in the future!! So thank you to Doctor Connon and his team!! And that’s today’s goodness! See you tomorrow!
